With this years Ceramic Art London(CAL) 2019 taking place at London’s Central Saint Martins, we catch up with Hannah Tounsend – the winner of last year’s Ceramic Review Newcomer to Ceramic Art London Award– to find out more about her career challenges and making technique. We also catch up with art and design historian Tanya Harrod, who last spoke to CR in 2000. Almost 20 years on, we discuss her work and the changes that have taken place in the world of art, craft and design in recent years. From the shift in focus from studio pottery onto fine art ceramics, to her experience of meeting and writing about Michael Cardew, her interview makes for fascinating reading.

It is our pleasure to feature one of the finest collections of ceramic art in the UK: that of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire at Chatsworth House. Featuring an installation by Jacob van der Beugel, through to Neolithic Chinese pots coloured by Ai Wei Wei, the collection features a diverse range of ceramic art and shows the extent to which the Duke has overcome the challenges of showcasing contemporary ceramics within their stately surroundings.

Don’t miss our tile-making Masterclass with Richard Miller; Phil Rogers discussing the influence of buncheong pottery on his work and our preview of Magdalene Odundo’s latest show, plus all the usual news and reviews.
