Scarva Earthstone ES40 Handbuilding White ClayHandbuilding White ES40 Handbuilding White has an appearance and firing range similar to ES5 Earthstone Original White. The addition of coarse molochite makes ES40 Earthstone Handbuilding an incredibly strong clay. It is heavily enough grogged to make the most extreme sculptural forms and is highly resistant to warping and cracking. ES40 is an ideal clay body for making hand made tiles and ceramic murals.

Excellent clay
I use this for all my hand building. It is lovely to work with and excellent when both plastic and leather hard. Because it is light in colour when fired it takes oxide washes and glazes well without muddying them. PS You can also throw with it!

Very well behaved clay. Gorgeous for hand building.
I thoroughly enjoyed this easy to use clay. For sculpture and handbuilding you really can't go wrong. Glad we have met. Hours of fun ahead. (I am a professional Potter)

What is the highest temp I can biscuit fire this to?
julie from Jersey
We recommend bisque firing to 1000°C for all clay bodies this is the ideal temperature as the body is porous enough to glaze easily, you can bisque fire as high as you like however be aware the higher you fire the less porous the body will become even at 1100°C you will notice the body is less porous and more difficult to glaze.

if unused, can it become dried out ,, out use??
afi from United Kingdom
As long as the clay is kept air tight and in a cool dark place it will keep forever, hope this helps.

Hi I would like to bisque fire to 1000 degrees c and use low fire 1040-60 underglazes ...is this possible for sculptural ceramics and using this clay?
DENISE from United Kingdom
Hi,
Yes this sounds fine for this clay. If you are leaving the underglazes unglazed this will work
Hope this helps!

Can I use the lower firing brush on earthenware glazes on ES40.
Thanks
Fiona from United Kingdom
Yes this is possible however the glazes will craze and the clay body will still be porous.

I have just realised that this clay temp range is 1240-1300 I wanted to fire to cone 6 as I have glazes I want to use to 1220 would this be ok?
Kate from United Kingdom
Hi, you should be ok firing at 1220°C, the glaze may craze on this body however and is therefore best suited for decorative or sculptural pieces. Hope this helps!
