Smooth Textured Crank
ES60

Firing Temperature 1200°C - 1260°C

A medium grogged alternative to our Standard Crank, ES60 offers a finer surface and closer texture. This clay is ideal for hand builders and sculptors who require a warm, plastic clay with excellent green strength and a smoother finish than standard cranks offer. ES60 is suitable for oxidation, reduction and raku firings. Under oxidation ES60 gives a toasted buff colour, under reduction a warm speckled orange.
  • Versatile crank body
  • Finely grogged
  • Tremendous plasticity
  • Excellent green and fired strength
  • Available in 12.5kg bags

A beautiful smooth crank.
A beautiful smooth crank. The fine sand means the clay has a smoother texture than regular crank, which is great if you want a more refined surface. Excellent plasticity and really fun and easy to use.

What is the highest temp I can biscuit fire this to?
julie from Jersey
We recommend bisque firing to 1000°C for all clay bodies this is the ideal temperature as the body is porous enough to glaze easily, you can bisque fire as high as you like however be aware the higher you fire the less porous the body will become even at 1100°C you will notice the body is less porous and more difficult to glaze.

What % of grog does this clay contain and the grain size ?

I love this ES60 for hand building and need a similar clay body in white, can you tell me the closest one in the range that will give a white finish? I fire to cone 6.
Lucy from United Kingdom
Yes the ES20 Smooth Textured Handbuilding is ideal, here is a link: http://www.scarva.com/en/Scarva-Earthstone-ES20-Smooth-Textured-White-Clay/m-5.aspx Hope this helps.

Does es60 need to be wedged before doing slab building for bonsai pots.or can it be used straight from the bag.
David from United Kingdom
Straight from the bag is fine.

What temp does this vitrify at please? Currently firing it to 1280°c but hoping I can try some lower stoneware temps around cone 5.
Lauren from United Kingdom
This clay should begin to vitrify around 1220oC. Hope this helps.

Hello, Can you please tell me if ES60 smooth crank is ok for a prolonged wood firing, possibly at 1300. Thanks.
Chris from United Kingdom
Hi there, 1240 would probably be the limit for a prolonged firing. Hope this helps.
Scarva Team
Whats the shrinkage for this clay please?
Jen from United Kingdom
Hi there, it's 11% at 1200.
