ESU185 Terracotta Stoneware Underglaze

Firing Orton Cone 5 - Cone 9

Scarva Earthstone Stoneware Underglazes have been developed to achieve dependable colour results at high temperatures, a feat which most commercial underglazes struggle with across the colour spectrum. Scarva Earthstone Underglazes are richly pigmented to give dependable, vibrant colour at your given firing temperature and can be used in a variety of application techniques. They can even be thinned to create beautiful watercolour effects.

Unglazed they will have a beautiful matt velour finish, glazing with an appropriate transparent will intensify the colour creating dramatic results.

Available as both a 100ml brushable liquid or as a handy 33ml writer pen, perfect for drawing and writing to create new and exciting designs or outline work.

Earthstone Underglazes are fully intermixable.

For best results, we recommend applying your Earthstone Stoneware Underglazes, bisque firing to 1000°C before glazing with Our new Scarva ColourCoat Underglaze Transparent Glaze, and glaze firing to the equivalent of Orton Cone 6 - 9 on your computerised controller.

Can these underglazes be used on bisque fired pieces?
Mary from United Kingdom
Hi, yes, these are perfect to use on bisque! Hope this helps!
Scarva Team
Can these underglazes be applied on greenware? If applied over bisque ware: do you suggest to re-fire the piece at 1000 and then fire again, for third time, for the glaze?
Livia from United Kingdom
Hi, yes, they can be applied on greenware. In our extensive testing we found it better to apply to bisque then refire to 1000°C before applying glaze and glaze firing. You can skip the second bisque firing if you wish - we simply found better glazed results as after a second bisque as the porosity is even across the piece. Hope this helps!

Will the lighter colours in the range burn off at 1250 degrees?
Sarah from United Kingdom
Hi, one of the main reasons we developed this range is that we wanted to produce reliable colour at high temperatures. We've tested every colour to above cone 9 and all work without burning out. In our kilns here however, cone 9 is 1235°C on a computerised controller. If you are glazing we suggest using our Earthstone ColourCoat Transparent as this has been formulated to work best with these underglazes. Hope this helps!
Scarva Team
Can the colours be mixed to create new colours as you can do with some underglazes?
Nicole from Ireland
Hi! Yes - these are fully intermixable. Hope this helps!
Scarva Team
Hello, are your new underglazes made in the UK?
Kay from United Kingdom
Hi, yes! These are manufactured right here in Scarva HQ!
Scarva Team
Hello Could these be used without clear glaze on porcelain? Curious about Parian and Royale porcelain in particular Thanks
Michaela from United Kingdom
Hi, we've tested on porcelain and parian without glazing and they work as expected. Be aware that as parian is a self glazing body the underglaze will appear more matt than the clay body. Hope this helps!
Scarva Team
Have you tried the white or colours on black stoneware clay?
Madeline from United Kingdom
Yes, the colours have been tested at cone 7 on black clay and they all work. Hope this helps!
Scarva Team
I’m wondering how opaque these are Have you tried the white or colours on black stoneware clay?
Madeline from United Kingdom
Hi, yes! These fire opaque on black clay with a couple of coats. Hope this helps!
Scarva Team
Hi, can these underglazes be used at 1260C with a clear glaze over the top? Are these true to colour or do they get darker after glazing and firing? Thanks
Nathan from United Kingdom
Hi, these will fire to Orton Cone 9 no problem. In the main image, the Earthstone part in the middle of the pot has been left unglazed to show the difference in glazed and unglazed colour. Hope this helps!
