Works on Black clay
If you have been having difficulties finding a glaze for the Earthstone Black clays, then this is a solution. Most glazes I have tries fail completely on the Black clay but this works well, no bubbling up or crawling. It has a glossy surface and is a strong opaque white. It can also break nicely on the rims to reveal the dark clay beneath.

Superb
This on a black body clay is superb, top results unlike most glazes that seem to burn on a black clay this wa made for it.

Can it also be used on food-safe speckle clays from your Earthstone range? Or only on the black clay?
Sarah from United Kingdom
This glaze was specially developed to be used on the black clays we have never tried it it should work but the result may not be as dramatic.

What would happen if you used it on special fleck and fired to cone 6? Please and thanks, Rgds Krissy.
Krissy from United Kingdom
The sample shown on the website is fired on a black black clay body so the glaze breaks on the surface showing the body underneath. If you fired it on a paler clay body the effect will not be as dramatic and just look like a normal white glaze.

Is this glaze food safe please ?
Sarah from United Kingdom
First and foremost, the term food safe cannot technically be applied to a glaze as supplied.
The final fired piece may be considered “food safe” however this is reliant on such a massive variety of factors outside of any suppliers control that there is no definitive answer. The clay body, form, surface texture, oxide addition, firing schedule and many other variables all need to be considered. Glazes with matt surfaces, crackle glazes or other non-glossy effect glazes should all be avoided for functional ware due to the possibility of the surface harbouring bacteria.
In general provided glazes are fired to maturity on a suitable clay body there should be no issue, however the only guaranteed way to have a piece deemed “food safe” is to have it tested by a certified ceramics testing laboratory. In the UK this is done by Lucideon and can be contacted through their website.
