NCG064 White Crawl - 1260°

Yet another brand new addition to the Scarva Nano Colours range for this and new is this fantastic range of crawl glazes. They were designed after enquiries from customers who wanted a reilable crawling glaze that could be coloured whilst still remianing vibrant and be suitable for most stoneware bodies. Due to the nature of crawl glazes they are only available in powder form, when making into a dipping glaze a lot more water must be used than normal, it is the drying of the glaze over the piece that creates the beautiful crawl effect as it contracts and pulls apart, much like arrid soil in a desert. We recommend using 2000ml of water for every 1000g of glaze and to adjust as necessary. The glaze should be passed through a fine mexsh sieve before dipping to ensure it is thoroughly mixed to create an even crawl. Below we have experimented with applying the crawl glaze onto Nano Coloured Porcelain Casting Slip which gives great contrast effects. Start experimenting today!

Really interesting
I use it over colored sslips or iron juice, and I also have tried it over a oribe glaze, the result is perfect
I have only 2 remarks
- if too thick, the uncooked glaze can fall so it is better to glaze at the last moment and put the piece in the kiln as soon as possible
- I fire at 1220°C
no problem in my electric kiln
if the pieces are at the bottom of my home made gaz kiln, the glaze is undercooked, but very nice too

Amazing!
I layered the glaze through double pouring and also dipped and layered with coloured slips and got a lichen effect. The effect was better than the Product pictures. Please see https://www.instagram.com/shadow_ceramics/. I will be buying more colours when they are in stock.

Hello, Is it necessary to use a black clay to get the effect right?
Tatiana from Ireland
You could achieve a similar result by applying glaze on top a black clay yes or alternatively on top of an underglaze or decorating slip.

Can i fire this glaze to 1200-1220 or does it have to be fired to 1260 to be fully developed?? THX!
Karin from Austria
You could fire to 1220oC on the controller with a 30 minute soak and it should work well.

Can you mix this with a medium to make it a paint on glaze and can you layer it over another glaze?
Christine from United Kingdom
This glaze is designed to be dipped, due to the high absorbency of the materials used in the formulation it does not behave well being brushed on. We haven't tried it over other glazes, it does perform well over slips but definitely could be experimented with! Hope this helps!

Hi i was after a baby pink crawl glaze can you colour these craw l glazes? also what do i need to buy to make a crater glaze as cant see these online, for stoneware thnaks
hollie from United Kingdom
Hi, Yes you could colour this with red stain to make a pink. Unfortunately we cannot provide recipes however an internet search for "volcanic glazes" brings up plenty of options. Hope this helps!
