P50 The name Parian is derived from Paros, the Aegian Island famous for its beautiful white marble widely used for sculpture by the classical Greeks. Parian ware became very popular in the mid-nineteenth century and was manufactured by many notable Stoke-on-Trent potteries. Parian is a self-glazing body, extremely translucent through a large temperature range. Ideally suited for casting to produce figurines, dolls and light forms etc. Please note: This body contains a very white feldspar which uses a floatation method of particle distribution and some frothing may occur when making casting slip under high speed mixing. Slow agitation is recommend.

Beautiful finish
I'm using this clay to build up busts. It fires to a beautiful smooth, glowing surface. Absolutely love it.

If the clay is self-glazing, how will I protect it from sticking to the kiln shelf?
If I'll place two pieces made out of this clay, one over another, will they stick together?
Thank you very much!
Tatiana from Ireland
Hi,
The self glazing aspect of this clay is more a sheen than a gloss. It will not fuse enough to stick to the shelf provided it isn't fired too high. Pieces should not stick together but we wouldn't recommend trying to do so.
Hope this helps

Can you colour Parian clay with a pigment? Can you wedge in glaze stain to colour it?
Michelle from United Kingdom
Yes Parian clay is an ideal clay body for stain addition.

Can I transform this into a casting slip?
Evan from Netherlands
Hi, you could if you wished however slip can be a difficult thing to set up properly. Your best bet would be to buy our CS80 which is the ready made casting slip from this body. If you wish to make your own you will need to adjust to the correct fluidity and pint weight using soda ash and sodium silicate. Hope this helps!

Are there any glossy transparent glaze suitable for parian? I would like to glaze the inside and leave the outside unglazed.
Erika from United Kingdom
Hi there, we would recommend GZ2150 fired to 1220.

Can you use velvet colours on parian? And could you use on glaze lustre?
Susie from United Kingdom
Yes you can use velvets on parian clay and once fired it is possible to use lustre. Hope this helps.
