A refractory material used to reduce shrinkage in clay bodies. Because of its interlocking crystal structure it also gives strength to clay bodies.

This material will change in volume as it's heated, going through an irreversible increase in volume of 1-9% as the raw grain size increases. This increase starts at approx 1250°C and ends at 1400°C. Kyanite decomposes into Mullite at 2750°F.
