Instructions for use

To make a dipping glaze

Make sure to assemble all the necessary materials before you begin to mix your glaze. We recommend mixing all your Studio Celadon glaze at once to ensure that all materials are completely homogenised and the outcome is as intended.

What you will need

  • Your glaze
  • A bucket or bowl large enough to hold your glaze
  • A bucket or bowl to receive the prepared glaze
  • A mask or respirator
  • A glaze mixer, mixing blade attachment and drill or a sturdy whisk
  • A 100-mesh sieve

Instructions

  1. Be sure to wear your mask or respirator when handling powdered glaze in the raw form and always try to keep dust formation to a minimum.
  2. Add your glaze to your bucket or bowl and slowly add your water at the ratio of 800ml of water for every kilogram of glaze.
  3. Mix your glaze and water together until combined. Pass through a 100-mesh sieve into your second bowl or bucket.
  4. Adjust your glaze to your preference - your water hardness will have a bearing on exactly how much you need to use but you should aim for a consistency similar to single pouring cream.

To make a brush-on glaze

Make sure to assemble all the necessary materials before you begin to mix your glaze. We recommend mixing all your Studio Celadon glaze at once to ensure that all materials are completely homogenised and the outcome is as intended.

What you will need

  • Your glaze
  • A bucket or bowl large enough to hold your glaze
  • A bucket or bowl to receive the prepared glaze
  • A mask or respirator
  • A sturdy whisk
  • A 100-mesh sieve
  • Scarva Glaze Medium

Instructions

  1. Be sure to wear your mask or respirator when handling powdered glaze in the raw form and always try to keep dust formation to a minimum.
  2. Add your glaze to your bucket or bowl and add your Scarva Glaze Medium at a ratio of 840ml of medium per 1kg of glaze
  3. Mix your glaze and medium together until well combined. Pass through a 100-mesh sieve into your second bowl or bucket.
  4. Give your final prepared glaze a good stir and you are ready to brush-on. This mixture can be stored in a sealed, airtight container and stored in a cool dark place. For optimum results, we recommend using this prepared glaze within 6 months from purchase.

Firing Instructions

We recommend these glazes be fired at Orton Cone 5/6 for best results. Scarva always recommends the use of pyrometric cones as this is the only reliable way to measure heat work in your kiln.

We fired all samples shown at Orton Cone 6, firing at 150°C/hr to 1000°C and 75°C to the equivalent temperature of Orton Cone 6 on our computerised controller.

Please can you tell me whether this range is mixable with other colours in this range, and is there a clear medium to dilute colours to a lesser saturation? Thanks
Anna from United Kingdom
Hi, Yes, the colours are all intermixable and you could dilute the colour with SCD-02 Frostbite, which is a transparent, or to make more pastel shades you could use SCD-01 Avalanche which is a white. Hope this helps!
