Introducing Scarva Studio Reactive Glazes

A new and exciting range of reactive, reduction effect cone 5/6 glazes.

The Scarva Studio Reactive glazes have been developed for cone 5/6 stoneware firing, each giving an exciting and unique effect creating beautiful results on all sorts of ware.

The glazes are available in powder form and formulated with dipping in mind; however, when combined with our Scarva Studio Reactive Glaze Medium, and made into brush-on form, you can achieve stunning results - highlighting brush strokes, varying thicknesses and textures and open up a world of possibilities in combining different glazes in unique combinations.

SR-09 Adrift is a stunning cone 5/6 glaze that breaks and pools beautifully over texture and rims. SR-09 Adrift shows wonderful caramel brown hues where thinner and floats through pale blues into darker shades where thicker. This glaze can run if applied too thickly as shown in the thickness and layering tab.

Variation In Thickness

In this section we will show you how the thickness of applied glaze affects the final fired outcome. Each glaze has been made up using Scarva Studio Reactive Glaze Medium at a ratio of 1kg glaze to 840ml Reactive Glaze Medium.

The glaze is applied in coats to bisque ware fired to 1000°C. Each coat is brushed perpendicular to the one previous as to achieve even coverage. Each layer was allowed to dry before applying the next. Once applied to the required thickness the finished pieces were fired to Orton Cone 6 at a final firing ramp of 75°C / hour with a soak of 20 minutes.

Instructions for use

To make a dipping glaze

Make sure to assemble all the necessary materials before you begin to mix your glaze. We recommend mixing all your Studio Reactive glaze at once to ensure that all materials are completely homogenised and the outcome is as intended.

What you will need

  • Your glaze
  • A bucket or bowl large enough to hold your glaze
  • A bucket or bowl to receive the prepared glaze
  • A mask or respirator
  • A glaze mixer, mixing blade attachment and drill or a sturdy whisk
  • A 100-mesh sieve

Instructions

  1. Be sure to wear your mask or respirator when handling powdered glaze in the raw form and always try to keep dust formation to a minimum.
  2. Add your glaze to your bucket or bowl and slowly add your water at the ratio of 800ml of water for every kilogram of glaze.
  3. Mix your glaze and water together until combined. Pass through a 100-mesh sieve into your second bowl or bucket.
  4. Adjust your glaze to your preference - your water hardness will have a bearing on exactly how much you need to use but you should aim for a consistency similar to single pouring cream.

  • Scarva Studio Reactive Glaze Medium

Instructions

  1. Be sure to wear your mask or respirator when handling powdered glaze in the raw form and always try to keep dust formation to a minimum.
  2. Add your glaze to your bucket or bowl and add your Scarva Studio Reactive Glaze Medium at a ratio of 840ml of medium per 1kg of glaze
  3. Mix your glaze and medium together until well combined. Pass through a 100-mesh sieve into your second bowl or bucket.
  4. Give your final prepared glaze a good stir and you are ready to brush-on. This mixture can be stored in a sealed, airtight container and stored in a cool dark place. For optimum results, we recommend using this prepared glaze within 6 months from purchase.

Firing Instructions

We recommend these glazes be fired at Orton Cone 5/6 for best results. Scarva always recommends the use of pyrometric cones as this is the only reliable way to measure heat work in your kiln.

We fired all samples shown at Orton Cone 6, firing at 150°C/hr to 1000°C and 75°C to the equivalent temperature of Orton Cone 6 on our computerised controller.

Another great reactive glaze
This works well on St Patrick’s College Red clay. Love the raw clay on the outside of the pot with the blues on the inside. Great coverage.

Beautiful green grey
Used as a brush on glaze with 4 coats, this comes out a very pleasant light grey/green with blue and brown undertones - definitely not like the example photo but still lovely, and breaks over texture nicely. Over the black catalyst the blues are much stronger and morph to light beiges. Didn't appear to run. Fired at 1180c + 30 min soak in a rather old and run down kiln so may have overfired

Hi there. Re: Reactive glazes. 1. What type of clay have these two pieces been fired on? Looks like a red clay maybe? 2. Thanks very much for the firing info. I’m curious to know what your peak temperature was to achieve cone 6 with that ramp and soak. Please can you tell me? Thanks Barbara Krajewski
Barbara from United Kingdom
Hi, these pieces are fired on Scarva Earthstone Original ES5. In the kiln we used to fire these pieces cone 6 is perfectly over at 1185°C on the controller with a final ramp of 75°C per hour. It's worth noting that cone 6 may be different in your kiln so we always recommend firing with Orton pyrometric cones. Hope this helps!

Does this glaze move and run? When brushed on
Heather from United Kingdom
These glazes are developed to give reactive results without running off the pot. They are relatively stable on stoneware bodies at the recommended firing temperature of cone 6. If you look at the images in the thickness and layering tab, you can see just how much they move. Hope this helps!

Can these reactive glazes be used on their own or do they have to be applied over another glaze?
Iman from United Kingdom
Hi, the main image of all these glazes is of what they look like used on their own. Hope this helps!

Hello is the brush on formulae ready made or do I need to buy the medium as well ?
Nicole from United Kingdom
