Orton Large Pyrometric Cones - Box of 50 £16.95
Pyrometric cones measure heat-work (the effect of time and temperature).
Pyrometric cones are slender pyramids made from about 100 carefully controlled compositions. Each cone number is unique in measuring temperature within a small temperature range (less than 30°C). Cones measure the amount of heat absorbed. As the cone nears its maturing range, it softens and the tip begins to bend, drawn down by the influence of gravity. To use cones: Use as witness cones to monitor firing. Three consecutively numbered cones will show the progress of the firing. Firing cone is properly bent when tip bends to near base of cone. When cone is not bent properly, adjust cone in kiln shut-off or setting on electronic controller. Faster firings require higher temperatures for cones to bend. Remember: kiln shut-off devices and electronic controllers change with time. Cones do not. Cones provide the best indicator of fired results and repeatable firings. Uniform mounting height and angle are very important. Box of 50
