Press moulding is still one of the best ways to introduce beginners to pottery and is widely used in schools, colleges, daycare centres and workshops. Hump & Press moulding: Pieces produced by pressing plastic clay slabs onto or into absorbent moulds. The clay slab is coaxed into place against the moulds by the hands, sponges, leather or rubber kidneys. As the clay stiffens, it retains the form of the mould and can then be removed for fettling.

Hi, which is the difference between your "hump&press" mould and "press" mould? Thank you!

Convex plaster forms are known as "hump moulds" or "drape moulds", while concave plaster forms are known as "slump moulds". The difference between a hump mould and a drape mould is the degree of slope of the shape. Drape moulds have a shallower slope than hump moulds. To select between a hump and a slump mould of the same shape, the artist must decide whether access to the inside surface (available with a slump) or the outside surface (available with a hump or drape) is most important. Drape or Hump moulds give the advantage of adding feet and handles to the outer surface of the piece in addition to decorating the outer surface. One must be sure to remove drying clay from a hump mould precisely at the leather-hard stage due to potential cracks from shrinkage strain. Slump moulds allow the clay piece to dry in the mould with a limited risk of cracking because the clay is able to shrink away from the plaster wall without the physical restrictions present in the hump.
