Are these low firing smooth clays ok for simple handbuilding? tiles, slab building, pinch pots etc?

Smooth bodies are not ideal for handbuilding, the best clays to use are ones with grogg in them as this will give you more strength in the green/making stage. You could make small things with a smooth clay body but it will struggle once you go over 15cm in height. Grogg also helps reduce warpage which is something to consider when making tiles.

I want to use low temp (1100) glazes with this clay and followed advice I saw to bisque to 1160 but my sprayed glazes didn't settle as the body wasn't porous enough. What do you recommend is the highest bisque temp I should try for spraying glazes? How will firing at 60C lower than the maturing temp affect the clay? thanks

Ideally bisque firing to 1000oC makes applying the glaze easy as the ware is still porous so can absorb the glaze. The higher you fire the less absorbent the body becomes. Doing a high bisque means the body is mature but applying glaze is difficult as you are aware. You could try heating the ware up a little or slightly decrease the bisque temperature however the ware will remain porous.

i am quite an experienced thrower and love this clay but i have only just got my own kiln so am new to the firing process - to date it has all been done for me! I like to use Amaco paint on stoneware potters choice glazes which they describe as cone 5-6. do you think they will work on earthsstone ES10?

Hi yes the ES10 has a relatively wide firing range so the Amaco Potters Choice will be an ideal combination. Hope this helps.

Can I glaze fire higher than I bisque fire? not only with this clay but in general..

Yes generally this is the best way to glaze. I would recommend bisque firing most clay bodies to 1000oC then glaze firing higher.
When you bisque fire to 1000oC the vessel will remain porous so when you glaze the pot it will act like a sponge absorb the water from the glaze and help it adhere to the vessel. The higher you bisque the less absorbent the vessel will be and eventually become very tricky to get the glaze to stick to the walls of the pot.
Stoneware glazes would be ideal for this clay body. Hope this helps.
