I have been looking at your previous questions and answers, and you mention that it can be hard for a transparent glaze to mature correctly on this clay.
does this mean it will be prone to having crazing issues and any other problems?

In response to this issue we have just recently developed 2 new glazes specially developed to work on the black clay bodies, they are GZ2160 Transparent and GZ2214 a White Iron Reactive Bearing Glaze, hope this helps.

There is an advice on your website that the Scarvia Earthstone black is not foodsafe. Can you please confirm this is correct - even if glazed and fired to 1260, and advise why this is?

That is correct it is not recommended for table ware due to the nature of ingredients in the body and the difficulty of getting a glaze to work on it well.

Is it ok to paint a slip on this clay at green stage and then bisque fire it? It sounds like glazes don't take well so maybe this might work?

Hi, I have two questions - 1. reading the above thread, am I correct in my understanding that if the item can be properly glazed, it is food safe?
2. I have used Amaco's Potters Choice (food safe) glazes succesfully on this clay body ... is this not food safe?

Sorry the glaze will most likely not work that well. We do not recommend using the black clays to create tableware.

Hi, we would advise firing lower to 1220. We would recommend using GZ2170 - a transparent specifically developed for our black clay bodies. Hope this helps.

The PF680 Smooth Textured Black Clay has a wide firing range of between 1060-1260°C therefore it is difficult to define it as a stoneware body as it is as much an earthenware body also, however it is important to note that the higher any of the black clays are fired the darker and more intense the black becomes.

Have purchased 25kg of your PF680 smooth black clay,I am wondering if it is suitable to be made into a casting slip and if so what is your recommended recipe for quantities of Soda Ash, Sodium Silicate, and Dispex. Thanks

We do not have a recipe for this but you could try this as a base but I am sure it will need adjustment.
25kg PF680
105grms Sodium silicate 140tw
5grms Soda ash
3850 grms Water

Hello, I have this clay PF680 black smooth. I am looking for a good transparent glaze that I can use on it. In the past I used P3552 Transparent glossy (EH 09IT). However, it turned a dark brownish colour which is not the finish I was looking for.
What transparent glaze do you suggest? thank you

Unfortunately we have not found a transparent that works on the black bodies yet it is because the clay contains so many oxides and foreign matter it is difficult for the glaze to mature correctly, sorry about this.

I have just purchased my first lot of Earthstone Professional PF680 Black Smooth, and one of the main reasons I am purchasing is for the colour: I am making unglazed sculptural pieces at the moment. On opening the bag I find that it is red, does the clay fire black, or have I got something else in the wrong bag?

This clay is a dark red colour at green stage, it will fire black when fired, the higher it is fired the blacker it will become.
