Works as it should
Works as it should, I use it for oxide washes or within a glaze recipe. cobalt can be very strong, I've found 5% is sufficient in both oxide washes and slip.

is this able to be painted on, and dinnerware safe?
shelly from United Kingdom
This is an oxide. It is supplied in powder form. An oxide would normally be added to a glaze, slip or clay body to colour it. It may also be mixed with water and applied onto ware then sponged back this would normally be for sculptural/decorative work. This technique would not be dinnerware safe.

Do you just add water to the oxide powder to decorate greenware, or does it need frit mixed in with it too?
Lou from United Kingdom
Just add water to create an oxide wash.

If added to a clay body, will it be food safe once fired and glazed?
If so, in which quantity yo you suggest to mix it in white clay to get a rich deep blue: 5%? 10%?

Should water diluted cobalt oxide be applied over or under clear glaze?
Lizzy from United Kingdom
Hi, you can do both, but it would be easier on top as the glaze is less likely to crawl off it. Hope this helps!

If this cobalt powder is mixed in with Your multipurpose stoneware transparent glaze(GZ2150), And glazed to 1250c. Will it retain its colour and be dinnerware safe? Thanks
N. from Ireland
Our GZ2150 transparent is an ideal base for oxide and stain addition. The percentage of cobalt added will effect the outcome a small addition of 0.25 to 1 % will create a translucent colour once you add more than this the glaze will become bluer and more opaque. If the glaze is suitable is food safe, here is a link with more information for you:
