Primarily used in casting slips as a deflocculent in combination with sodium silicate. Used as a glaze it is a powerful flux, which also produces alkaline colour. However, owing to its solubility it is usually introduced in the form of a frit. When introduced into low solubility glazes it will weaken their resistance to acid attack.
