If a glaze is food safe our not depends on several factors including the type of clay used, the firing temperature, the shape of the vessel, the thickness of glaze even the position of the vessel in the kiln can have an effect on the glaze. Ideally a food safe test would be carried out by a reputable body like British Ceram. In the case of the glaze mentioned it would most likely pass a food safe test providing it was fired on a suitable body like our ES5 Earthstone Original in an electric kiln and to the suggested firing temperature.

If the glaze is listed as mls or Ltrs it is brush on, if it is listed in grms or kgs it is supplied in powder form, hope this helps.

If I have already glazed a piece on one surface with a high temperature glaze, could I then use this glaze on the other side firing at a lower temperature and thus not effecting the already glazed side?

Hi, this glaze can be used for both dipping and brushing. If you'd like to use it for dipping simply purchase the powdered version in the options. If at any stage you'd like to make it a brush-on glaze you can do so but combining with our Scarva Brush-on Glaze Medium. Hope this helps!

Yes simply add water to the powder and pass through a fine mesh sieve to create a dippable/sprayable glaze.
To make a brush on glaze you would add our RM1072 brush on medium to the powder and sieve. Hope this helps.

I have been using this glaze for a while over Amaco velvet underglazes mixing it from powder and pouring it from a jug. but recently it has pulled the underglazes in places. Have I accidentally mixed it too thinly? Should I remix?

You could try bisque firing the underglaze before applying the transparent this may help it to adhere to the vessel without compromising the underglaze. Hope this helps.

I used brush on version of this glaze and applied of 3 layers on bisque fired terracotta with no underglaze, and drying time between each layer. Then glaze fired to 1100C. When finished the glaze came out foggy (it was not transparent/clear). Is it because the layers were too thick or should I have fired at higher temperatures?

Hi, there are a few issues here, 3 layers is too many for this particular glaze, it would be better with 1 or 2. The glaze is fired too low, this glaze works best at 1180°C. It is very difficult to get a transparent to work properly on terracotta without using leaded frits, we are developing an unleaded transparent for terracotta and will hopefully be available to buy soon. Hope this helps!

will this glaze be alright if I fire to 1185C (5 degrees over max) or should I use Scarva GZ2150 alternatively if I want to fire over 1180?

Hi, it's very likely this glaze will craze. The best glaze to use would be SCD-02 Frostbite (Clear) fired to cone 6. Hope this helps!
