Scarva Earthstone ES90 Flecked Stoneware ClayFlecked Stoneware Many potters want to achieve the attractive, speckled effect that reduction firings give to clay, but this is not usually possible in an electric kiln. Some flecked clays have been introduced in the past, however, we believe this is the most successful one yet. ES90 Flecked Stoneware, when fired in an electric kiln, gives the attractive, speckled effect of a reduction firing. Based on our ES80 reduction body, this clay performs well and is ideal for the production of domestic tableware.

Lovely clay
Really nice to throw with - improved my throwing capabilities! Have been able to throw much bigger forms. Turns well and did not warp on firing. Worked differently with my usual glazes - more interesting results.

Great
Excellent clay body. Interesting results with the fleck, can cause pinholes in some glazes I've tried. I use successfully for throwing. Really lovely with the right glaze.

Will the speckles show up through all glaze finishes, gloss, satin and matt?
Natalie from United Kingdom
Hi,
It really depends entirely on the glaze, an iron reactive glaze or a transparent the speck will show however the more you increase the opacity of a glaze the less likely it will be that you see the speck through it.
Hope this helps

Hello there, Do you have any photos showing this clay when fired In oxidation? I understand that the flecks might not show through all glazes but do you have any examples where this effect has been achieved successfully?
Thank you.
Lorna from Ireland

can this clay be fired at 1180C - 1185C or it must be fired at minimum of 1220?
Jaleel from Kuwait
Hi,
This clay won't be vitirifed at such a low temperature, you may experience issues with glaze fit and porosity. Ideally it needs to be fired higher.
Hope this helps

Hi, I just wanted to check the firing temperature. I fire to cone 6, with Amaco Potters Choice Glazes,is this hot enough for this clay? Using conversation table I get some that say cone 6 is 1200 others 1220. Could you advise what cone temperature.
Many thanks
