Is one coat sufficient to get a good strong black under a clear glaze. I plan on using it on recessed lettering on bisque and then putting a clear glaze over.

I would recommend around two coats to give a strong coverage, hope this helps.

Yes these or any underglazes will work for scrafitto you may also use coloured decorating slips on unfired clay which may give you a better result.
